The History
of Pine View Municipal Golf Course
In
1972 the City of Ottawa, realizing it had not had
a municipal golf course since the closing of
McKellar Golf Course for housing in the 1950’s,
was looking for a golf course for its residents.
The City of Ottawa had the money and financing
powers but no land. By coincidence the Township of
Gloucester had the land within its boundaries but
not the financial capacity to bring the land into
a viable golf operation.
This resulted in a joint venture between
the City of Ottawa and the Township of Gloucester
and the National Capital Commission to revive the
Pine View Golf Course that had long been neglected
both in course and the buildings. An agreement
between the two parties was signed and a lease
prepared and accepted by the National Capital
Commission.
A
Board of Management was set up with four members
from the City of Ottawa and four members from the
Township of Gloucester. Citizen members
have been added to the Board of Management since.
On
February 1, 1977 the original clubhouse was
destroyed by fire. The 1977 golf season continued
on as the staff, 19th hole and pro shop
operated out of trailers. The fall of 1978 found
Pine View moving into its new clubhouse.
With
the ever-growing popularity of the game of golf
Pine View saw the opportunity to expand and the 18
hole Executive Course was built and ready to play
on in 1991. The Championship course saw a major
improvement when the new watering system was
installed in 2000.
1999
saw a change of ownership for Pine View.
The City of Gloucester purchased the City
of Ottawa share and became the sole owners. 2001
brought along another change of ownership for Pine
View – the amalgamation of the cities – and
Pine View was now under the sole ownership of the
City of Ottawa. |
